What if there was a way of looking at the history of America which helped us understand how America got to where it is today where the right of someone to make a living or make common everyday decisions for themselves became such a hotly contested public policy debate topic? Professor Wall welcomes Dr Patrick Newman back to the show to discuss his newest work which seeks to accomplish just that. Taking the approach formulated by Murray Rothbard of looking at history as a struggle between liberty and power, Newman has created Cronyism: Liberty vs Power in Early America, 1607 – 1849, the first of a planned series of books covering the history of America through this perspective and going through intertwined economic and political aspects of America’s story which are often overlooked or dismissed. In this conversation the Professor and Dr Newman go over some of the later events in America’s history which the book covers such as the Monroe Doctrine, the Missouri Compromise, the Annexation of Texas, the Jacksonian political coalition, American westward and overseas expansion, the colorful presidency of John Tyler and much more!
