“Those who do not learn from the lessons of History are doomed to repeat them” is how the old saying goes. Here at On This Terrestrial Ball, we take that saying to heart and so seek to help people discover the truth through learning the lessons which History teaches us. We analyze the world through the lens of History’s lessons and then seek to arrive at the truth through the application of those lessons.
One of the most important lessons the world does not seem to understand is that the best solutions to the world’s problems can come through allowing individuals and local communities to handle and solve their own issues at the lowest level possible. This is best laid out in the Principle of Subsidiarity which holds that “a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co- ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.” Translated into commonly understood terms, “This tenet holds that nothing should be done by a larger and more complex organization which can be done as well by a smaller and simpler organization. In other words, any activity which can be performed by a more decentralized entity should be.” This belief is an excellent balance between the impractical and dangerous ideologies of anarchism and totalitarianism and thus satisfies the need for law and order while not compromising the freedom of the individual. With this in mind, we also analyze the world through a mindset grounded in the Principle of Subsidiarity.
We speak on any topic that interests us here, always pulling on historical precedent and grounding our beliefs in the Principle of Subsidiarity as the basis for how we speak on the topic. We speak on current events, books, movies, sports, days in history, genealogy, anything really. If you want the historical perspective mixed with a belief in decentralization, then this is definitely the site for you!
